Another birthday in the house

There's been another birthday in the house this week.

This time it was David's turn to be celebrating as he turned 9.

Birthday boys always get to choose what they would like for their birthday dinner, as well as what type of cake they would like.

David asked if we could have take away pizza from Pizza Hut for dinner! We've never had Pizza Hut for dinner before because it wouldn't be fair on the boys who can't eat it. However, when David asked for this I also got to thinking that it's his choice of treat after all. Calum and Alasdair were both fine with it - they both got to have Sainsburys Free From fish fingers for dinner so they were happy too.

The birthday boy was delighted when the girl came to the door with the pizzas, although a little disappointed that she didn't come on a scooter like they do on the movies.

He had also requested that we have Pizza Express dough balls, which I was able to buy in the supermarket. Nothing like mixing up your pizza restaurants!

Boy are those pizzas filling! I can hardly move 6 hours later!

His birthday cake request surprised me a little - he asked for a lemon cake. Despite the request for pizza, I think his taste buds are actually quite sophisticated for a 9 year old!

Lemon cake it was.

Triple layered, as it was a special occasion.

And he specifically asked if I could decorate it the way I usually do 'with that wee slice of lemon twisted on the top.'

'Gather round your brother so I can get a nice photo of you all together', I said.

'A nice one please?'

'Because Granny & Grandad and Granny & Shen will be asking to see one...'

There we go.

And of course, here is the obligatory clip of the cake and the birthday song.

Happy birthday to our sport loving David. Everything this boy does he does with a passion, both the good and the not quite so good. Channel that passion in the right direction and he will move mountains for you.

May he be blessed with many more birthdays, pizza filled or not.

Happy 1st Birthday Sweet Boy

Yesterday we celebrated Fraser's first birthday

The boys were so excited about it being his birthday. Alasdair (5) was especially so.

The night before, Alasdair asked me if Fraser would be much bigger on his birthday. I asked him if he was much bigger on his birthdays and he said he wasn't really. Then he thought for a bit and said that he hoped that Fraser would still have the same cute face when he was one.

Yesterday morning as I woke Alasdair I asked him what day it was.

'Um, Diluain?' he answered sleepily. He was only a day out. Diluain is the Gaelic for Monday.

I told him it was actually Dimairt (Tuesday) and asked if he remembered what special day it was.

He sat upright, so excited, and said to Fraser, 'it's your birthday today and you get an age now!'

The birthday boy enjoyed ripping the wrapping off his presents.

Fraser has never had cake before. He still doesn't like lumpy foods. I made a cake that would be suitable for him so he could try some anyway. Just in case it was the day of a breakthrough. It wasn't, but we all enjoyed the cake. There is still some left to try him again tomorrow. Just in case.

Although his brothers that have egg allergies are able to eat egg fine in cakes & biscuits, I didn't want to test out whether this was the case with Fraser on his birthday and so I made the cake wheat free, dairy free, soya free, nut free and egg free.

It was my first time adapting a cake to be egg free and I was pretty pleased with how it turned out!

James (14) was determined that we should do a cake smash for Fraser. I wasn't concerned about the mess as much as the state the eczema on Fraser's hands would be like afterwards. It doesn't matter what he gets on his hands it will make them itch. If any of his food goes on them he will start to scratch and nearly every dinner time ends with him clawing away at his hands. Fortunately by the time he gets upstairs to his bath he has forgotten about the itch.

Since he wasn't getting a cake smash, James did let Fraser stick his fingers in the icing of his cake, as he was the one in charge of looking after Fraser while dad and I were on the other side of the table taking photos! As usual his hands were sore and itchy after his little bit of fun, but as usual his bath soon stopped the scratching.

And to finish with, as I always do with a birthday post, here is the cake and the singing of Happy Birthday.

May this be the first of many happy birthdays for our delightful, sweet natured littlest boy.

Easter weekend fun, some makings and another birthday!

Last week the weather played ball for once and was perfect school holiday weather!

The boys were able to spend all day, every day outdoors - which I think is a boy's natural habitat!

They decorated the driveway with chalk drawings.

Alasdair (4) was delighted to have the stabilisers put on a 'big boy' bike.

See. Delighted.

And I even coaxed the teenager in the house outdoors too.

I told James (14) that I was about to do some woodwork and he was out like a flash!

I found scraps of wood lying around the shed from when we had the fence fixed last year and decided they would be perfect for the raised beds I had planned to add to the garden this year.

James said he wanted to build them for me, I just needed to draw him a plan. He was soon sawing and hammering away, while I got on with the task of digging away some turf to make space for the new beds.

It took us a couple of days to get these three done, in between baby naps and other tasks but don't they look good?! I still need to fill them with earth/compost but the weather has turned today!

On Saturday, while I got on with some heavy weeding and building a wee rockery round the front of the house, my hubs gave the barbecue it's annual spring scrub and so that evening we had our first of the season. Hopefully the first of many!

Incidentally, my hubs rarely cooks (although he can if needed to), which doesn't bother me at all as I see cooking the meals as one of my responsibilities, but when the barbecue is out it's his domain!

Last week was my husband's sister's birthday and so we went to help her celebrate on Sunday.

Everyone who knows her knows how much she loves purple. She asked us to buy her a new kettle as a present and so when we saw a purple one, well, we just had to buy it!

And of course the cake I made her was purple too!

Even on the inside!

The final day of our Easter weekend was spent at a nearby Country Park. It was a beautiful day for a walk in the forrest.

Some pine cone grenade throwing and ambushes!

And some fun in the park.

All that fresh air makes for some happy but sleepy boys - some with coordinating onesies too!

How did everyone else spend the Easter weekend? Anyone do anything exciting?
