Make it Monday - Lego Minifigure Costumes

On Friday it was the annual Boys' Brigade fancy dress party.

We had been thinking over what costumes the boys wanted to make for a few weeks but nobody could decide what they wanted to be. Ally (5) was first to make a decision, choosing to dress up as a soldier with the soldier dress up clothes from the dress up box that he wears quite often. All he wanted to add was some Camo face paint.

Two days before the party Calum (12) decided he would like to be a Lego Minifigure. Of course, as soon as David (8) heard this he decided that he wanted to be one too.

Look at that mean soldier above!

The mini figures were really easy to make, which was just as well given the last minute of the decisions!

The heads are just made up of sheets of yellow card stuck together and the features drawn on with Sharpie.

For the hands I bought a piece of the foam insulation you buy for putting round pipes. It already has a hole in the middle of it and we just cut out a little wedge to make the right size of opening for the hand. Then the boys painted them yellow with some acrylic paint. Rather haphazardly it would have to be said! We stuck a straw in the foam so that the could hold them inside their sleeves.

They were really pleased with their costumes, and one of them even won the prize for the best costume.

I think it was awarded for cuteness rather than the skill of the costume though as it was this boy who won.....

And yes of course soldiers wear wellies. It's a vital part of their uniforms!

David's Lego Party

On Saturday David had a few friends and his cousins round for a Lego party to celebrate his 7th birthday.

He was so excited from the moment he woke up in the morning, forever asking when it would be his party - it didn't start until 3pm so the first time he asked I could see him deflate when I said it was still 7 hours away!

I put his excitement to good use though and he helped me get everything organised.

His first job was to fill the Lego party bags with the Lego goodies we had found on Amazon.

He helped me make the sandwiches.

He put the Lego mini figure rice paper pictures on the cupcakes as I iced them.

He watched me make the mini figure head cake pops.

Then finally it was time for the party to start.

While we waited for everyone to arrive I had dot to dot sheets from Lego.com for those who were waiting. I also found a blank Lego man picture and everyone had to design their own Lego man.

We played 'stick the Lego shark on the water while blindfolded' (again from Amazon).

There was also a game of pass the parcel. Whenever anyone took a wrapper off they were given a chocolate Lego mini figure that I made using our mini figure ice cube tray.

I found a great printable Lego bingo (just search for that on google and it will come up). The kids really enjoyed that and I really enjoyed that we had a nice quite game to play!

After the bingo I brought out some of the Lego board games that we have in our cupboard. The partygoers split into two groups and played two different games, then swapped over.

The smaller ones played their game much quieter than the bigger ones above!

Then it was time for the food.

And the birthday cupcakes.

Daddy was away at a conference all day and arrived home half an hour after the last guest had left (apart from the cousins, who were still here). Some of you may be thinking that was rather convenient of him........:0)

Anyway, just so that he didn't miss out on all the Lego fun, we had a family games night and spent it playing....

....a Lego board game of course!

A Movie Premiere

It seems like the day after the Oscars is the ideal time to premiere our James' Lego animation.

I mentioned a couple of weeks ago how I had bought some animation software for him since he so enjoyed making little animations using my phone.

He worked out how to use the software in no time. You use your webcam to take the still photos. There are over 2000 sound effects to add, as well as music and the option to add your own voice and music.

He spent the mid-term holiday week working on this one, which he has entered in the short film competition at the local Mod (the Mod is a Gaelic music/arts competition. More in another post, I'm sure!)

The animation is the story of the Sword in the Stone, but in Gaelic.

I think Aardman Animation will be on the phone soon offering him a job :0)

The Great Escape - with a Lego twist (of course!)

My husband loves old war movies. He'll watch the newer ones too but thinks the old ones are by far the best.

One of his favourites is The Great Escape. In the holidays he decided it was time to introduce the boys to it, so when we were at his parents' at Hogmanay he, his dad and the boys all sat down to watch it.

The boys soon got into it, especially when the prisoners were all escaping, and James turned to his dad and said, 'I didn't think it would be this exciting!'

Today we were shopping for a birthday present for a friend of James' when they spotted this card.

(I don't know why blogger keeps flipping my image round but just tilt your head!)

A month ago it would have made no sense to them but today they thought it was hilarious!

We bought it for them to give to daddy when he comes home tomorrow.

Gaelic word of the day:
eibhinn (ay-veen) - funny
